WA, OR Fish Commissioners To Get Columbia Steelhead Update

Members of the Washington and Oregon Fish and Wildlife commissions will meet this week to receive updates on this year’s Columbia River steelhead run and actions taken to protect the run so far.

A FISH PASSAGE CENTER SHOWS HOW THE 2021 STEELHEAD COUNT AT BONNEVILLE DAM (RED LINE) COMPARES TO 2020’S (BLUE LINE) AND THE 10-YEAR AVERAGE (BLACK LINE). THIS YEAR’S LOW FORECAST LED TO RESTRICTIVE REGULATIONS ON THIS FISHING SEASON, WITH ADDITIONAL MEASURES ADDED AFTER THE RUNSIZE WAS DOWNGRADED SHARPLY, THOUGH SINCE RECALIBRATED UPWARDS SOMEWHAT, THANKS TO A PUSH OF LATE AUGUST AND EARLY SEPTEMBER FISH AS WATERS COOLED. Four members of the Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission and three members of the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission will host an online meeting from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 16.

Commissioners are expected to further discuss the status of Columbia River steelhead, as well as actions taken to conserve steelhead in the river. This follows a meeting held in late August that also addressed steelhead status and conservation; a recording of that meeting can be viewed at https://www.tvw.org/watch/?eventID=2021081086.
