SW WA, Columbia, Gorge Pools Fishing Report (3-8-22)

Preliminary Washington Columbia River mainstem and tributary sport sampling summary February 28-March 6, 2022

Mainstem Columbia River 

Salmon/Steelhead

Sec 1 (Bonneville) – Four bank anglers had no catch.  

Sec 2 (Camas/Washougal) – 4 boats/5 rods had no catch. 

Sec 3 (I-5 area) – 1 boat/1 rod had no catch.  

Sec 4 (Vancouver) – 12 bank anglers had no catch. 16 boats/31 rods had no catch. 

Sec 5 (Woodland) – 78 bank anglers kept three steelhead and released one steelhead. 9 boats/22 rods  had no catch.

Sec 6 (Kalama) – 17 bank anglers had no catch. 6 boats/12 rods had no catch. 

Sec 7 (Cowlitz) – 3 boats/7 rods had no catch. 

Sec 8 (Longview) – 21 bank anglers released one steelhead. 6 boats/11 rods had no catch.

Sec 9 (Cathlamet) – 11 bank anglers had no catch.  

Sec 10 (Cathlamet) – No report.  

A FEW ANGLERS HAVE BEEN PLUNKING THE LOWER COLUMBIA IN HOPES OF CATCHING AN EARLY HATCHERY SPRING CHINOOK OR A WINTER STEELHEAD. THIS IMAGE FROM THE KALAMA AREA WAS TAKEN MANY MOONS AGO. (CHRIS SPENCER)

Sturgeon: 

Sec 3 (I-5 area) – 1 boat/2 rods had no catch.  

Sec 5 (Woodland) – 1 boat/2 rods had no catch. 

Bonneville Pool – No report 

The Dalles Pool – Seven bank anglers had no catch. 7 boats/19 rods kept two legal and released eight sublegal and one oversize sturgeon. 

John Day Pool – 24 bank anglers kept two legal and released five sublegal and two oversize sturgeon.  36 boats/90 rods kept 12 legal and released seven sublegal and nine oversize sturgeon. 

[EDITOR’S NOTE: WDFW AND ODFW THIS AFTERNOON ANNOUNCED THAT THE JOHN DAY POOL WILL CLOSE FOR STURGEON RETENTION EFFECTIVE MARCH 10, 2022, MAKING WEDNESDAY THE LAST DAY TO KEEP ONE ON THIS EASTERN COLUMBIA GORGE RESERVOIR.]

Walleye: 

Bonneville Pool – No report. 

The Dalles Pool – Five bank anglers released one walleye. 20 boats/47 rods kept 53 walleye and  released one walleye. 

John Day Pool – 29 boats/79 rods kept 75 walleye and released six walleye. 

Columbia River Tributaries 

Salmon/Steelhead

Cowlitz River I-5 Br downstream – 50 bank rods kept six steelhead. 2 boats/4 rods kept two steelhead.  

Cowlitz River Above the I-5 Br – 63 bank rods kept 13 steelhead. 25 boats/88 rods kept 31 steelhead and released four steelhead. 

Kalama River – No report.  

Lewis River – Five bank rods had no catch.
