Waiver Granted For Makah Tribe To Apply For Whale Hunt Resumption

NMFS has granted the Makah Tribe a waiver from Marine Mammal Protection Act take prohibitions for ceremonial and subsistence gray whale hunts, opening the way for the tribe to apply for and receive a permit to hunt up to 25 of the whales in US waters over a 10-year period, a move that will “honor the Makah Tribe’s treaty rights and their cultural whaling tradition that dates back well over 1,000 years, and is fundamental to their identity and heritage.”
