As a father figure with a fishing fixation I have one slight foible: I don’t exactly have a boat that will comfortably or safely fit myself and the fellows.
Sure, I could bungie cord my sons to the back of my pontoon boat or the gunwales of my dad’s ancient canoe, but that might not be smiled upon by The Authorities.
Yeah, I bet I could go down to Auburn Sports or Stevens Marine and get some sort of screamin’ deal on a sled or Smokercraft, but hauling it home might be a problem due to some, ahem, horsepower issues.
And I call myself a fish mag editor.
Fortunately there is a solution. If you read this blog earlier in the week, you already know what it is: rent a boat.
My local water, Green Lake, features a host of paddle boats, kayaks, stand-up paddle boards, etc., etc., etc., as well as row boats to take out for a few bucks.
This past Sunday, River, Kiran and I rented one of the bathtub-sized models for a couple hours and had a good time, catching numerous fish and rays.
The only problem with the Green Lake boat rental shop, however, is their hours — they don’t open till 11, about an hour before Kiran’s nap time (we just bit the bullet on Sunday).
That’s because their clientele isn’t really anglers, though there was one other dad out that day with three kids in his tub.
Enter resorts on fishing lakes. Typically they have boats to rent — some with oars, some with motors. For instance, Offut Lake Resort, which has electric-powered craft as well as canoes.
