First Springer Landed On Columbia

What appears to be 2016’s first confirmed Columbia River spring Chinook was landed last weekend.

Ifish angler mwhite and buddy Remdog landed it while making sure the boat could handle the main event next month and in April, then posted a pic to the website’s popular first springer contest.

The image shows a 12- to 15-pounder and a copy of the Sunday Seattle Times.

“First trip of the year on the shake down cruise and luck was on our side!” mwhite reports. “Remdog and I took the boat out to make sure it was ready for the “real” season coming up and couldn’t believe it when we hooked up on this bad boy!”

State creel checkers say they also heard of a possible springer caught off an unspecified beach last Thursday, but it was said to be released.

Past years have seen the first springer of the season landed Jan. 26, Feb. 1, Feb. 4, Feb. 5 and Feb. 6.
