SW WA, Lower Columbia (Non) Fishing Report (1-23-12)

UPDATED 11:20 A.M., JAN. 24, 2012, WITH COLUMBIA RIVER/POOL DATA FROM ODFW SHOWING A FAIR STURGEON BITE IN THE BONNEVILLE POOL -- SEE END.

Kind of a scrawny fishing report from fisheries biologist Joe Hymer in Vancouver -- what, did some sort of megastorm hit the Northwest or something last week?!!?!?!

SALMON/STEELHEAD

Bonneville and The Dalles pools – No salmonid anglers were sampled.

John Day Pool – The few bank anglers sampled had no catch.

STURGEON

Bonneville Pool – Boat anglers averaged nearly a legal kept per boat.

Through Jan. 22 an estimated 737 legals have been kept.  The 2011 guideline was 2,000 fish. The guidelines for 2012 have not been finalized yet. Note:  There was an error made last week in calculating the estimate for the week ending Jan. 15.  That estimate has been corrected.

The Dalles and John Day pools – No legals were sampled.

WALLEYE AND BASS

Bonneville, The Dalles, and John Day pools – No effort for either specie was found in any of the pools.

TROUT

Battleground Lake – Planted with 5,029 catchable size and 24 ten pound rainbows Jan. 17.  No report on angling success.

COLUMBIA FISHING

Weekend Fishing Opportunities:

Sturgeon angling is good for boat anglers in the Bonneville Pool.  Water flows have been high and boaters should be mindful of large debris floating down the river.

Winter steelhead fishing should improve when the flows drop and the water clears.

SALMON, STEELHEAD AND SHAD:

John Day Pool:

Weekly checking showed no catch for three bank anglers.

STURGEON:

Sturgeon angler ffort was light due to inclement weather and high muddy flows this past weekend on the lower Columbia.  Boaters should be mindful of large debris floating down river.
