11.31-pdr Wins Everett Coho Derby

An 11.31-pound silver caught Saturday in the south end of Admiralty Inlet held on to win the 22nd Annual Everett Coho Derby.

“Feels a bit surreal, but great,” said winning angler Harald Schot of Mount Vernon.

He says he will be splitting the $10,000 first prize with others on his buddy’s boat.

“It’s only fair,” said the financial planner whose office is in Stanwood.

They were fishing on the west side of Possession Bar yesterday morning when the coho bit an “Ace High fly inside a purple haze squid behind a jelly crush flasher.”

Second place and $5,000 went to another Saturday fish, Nicholas Kelleher’s 10.82, while Kevin Simpson of Everett picked up third and $2,500 for Sunday’s largest, a 10.32.

Incredibly, those were the only double-digit coho amongst the 851 weighed in, but it also follows on a trend that began last year, which saw just 12 of 10 pounds or more — 2014’s winner was Mark Hamlin’s 11.96.

“This was an interesting derby in the fact that for the second year in a row, we didn’t weigh a fish over 12 pounds,” noted organizer Mark Spada. “In the previous 20 years, it always took a fish of midteens, or bigger to win our derby. For whatever reason, there’s definitely a trend towards smaller fish in all of the salmon species.”

It is likely that poor feeding conditions due to The Blob led to smaller fish; the average size silver was 4.54 pounds (2014’s average was 6.15; some years have been into the upper 8’s).

But participation was good, with 1,966 adult and 220 kids tickets sold.

Biggest kids fish was an 8.14-pounder caught by Jamie Malysheff, who won $300.

The weather could have been better on Sunday, when the National Weather Service issued a small craft advisory, but some anglers still got out, whether on Puget Sound’s Marine Areas 8-1, 8-2, 9 and 10 or the rivers of Snohomish, King and Skagit Counties, and weighed in just under 225 by the early 1 p.m. cutoff.

“This year’s Everett Coho Derby was a great success, with over 800 fish weighed in, and almost 2,300 total participants,” noted Spada.

By comparison, 2008’s event saw only 246 silvers slayed.

We will have the name of the winner of the Northwest Salmon Derby Series boat raffle as it becomes available.

The Everett Coho Derby is put on by the Snohomish Sportsmen’s Club and Everett Steelhead & Salmon Club. Proceeds benefit local fish projects, including the release of 80,000-plus coho fry annually.
